I wanted to bring out the darkness of Gundam Wing Mobile Suit. So I have to work mostly in darkness and used LED touches as my main sources of light.

Sometime back, I did some operations to insert a LED in each of my Gundam Deathscythe Scale Models, to light up the green eyes. I think the green eyes bring out the mysteries and darkness of this Gundam scale model series.

It was a fun experience taking photos of Gundam Deathscythe and Gundam Deathscythe Hell.

I had been wanting to setup a powerline Ethernet using Homeplug adapters in my home.

Recently, due to installing some new equipment, my Internet Access point (Modem) was shifted to another room. I decided to use powerline Ethernet to connect my existing equipment to the Internet Access Point (Modem).

I used TP-Link 200Mbps Homeplug adapters to do connection.

According to the Quick Instruction Guide, all I had to do was to plug in the Homeplug Adapters onto the powerline. The two Homeplug adapters will automatically connect to each other.

True enough, it was a quick and simple installation. It took only a few seconds for the two adapters to form the network.

Now, it was time to make my powerline Ethernet private. It was to prevent others outside the house to connect to my network.

The instruction was put inside the softcopy manual inside the CD-ROM provided. According to the manual, the homeplug adapters can only find and connect to other homeplug adapters with the same network name. This can be changed using the utility software provided.

The inconvenient part was that, I had to unplugged the Homeplug Adapter to copy down the MAC address and Password printed there. These information was needed for the utility software provided to access the individual Homeplug Adapter to change the network name.

Despite the small inconvenience, the process was simple and straight forward. It took me a few minutes to do so.

In term of performance, there was no noticeable change in the my Internet Access Speed. The only difference was that, I had one less power socket point in each home.

According to the supermarket aunties, Bukit Merah Central McDonald’s is now going through renovation. It is expected to re-open in December 2010. And it would not be as big as it was used to. It would be smaller.

This evening, when I was at Bukit Merah Cental for dinner, I was shocked to find that the McDonald’s there was closed for good. This was sad news for me. Before that, I had heard that that McDonald’s outlet would be closed soon. Despite knowing the news, I could not help but feeling something was missing.

I remembered, the last time, I visited the restaurant was on 31st March 2010. I went there to a S$2.50 breakfast before heading to work. Little I noticed the notice that it would close at 10pm on the same day.

I am not a fan of McDonald’s, neither I am encouraging eating fast food. But the McDonald’s at Bukit Merah Central had been providing much convenience to those people like me, living or working around Bukit Merah Central.

First would be the famous McDonald’s S$2.50 breakfast consisting of Sausage McMuffin and a hot coffee/tea. Although it was only available during weekdays, excluding public holiday, it was a simple, cheap and convenient breakfast for us rushing to work. We could easily purchase the set back to the office. After finishing the McMuffin, we could slowly enjoy the coffee while doing our work.

Secondly, I found that this was a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast during lazy weekend morning. For many weekends, after waking up late, I was in a loss of what to eat. It was too late to have breakfast but too early to have lunch, and I was hungry. McDonald’s breakfast was just nice to fill in the gap. It had the elements of the breakfasts and filling enough for lunch.

Thirdly, it was located at the right spot near a bus stop where I usually alight and just near the Bukit Merah Bus Interchange. Anytime, just before I returned home, I could easily visit the restaurant to get a hot apple pie or French fries, to be consumed while walking home.

Lastly, it was opened 24 hours a day. I could go to the restaurant anytime I wanted. Occasionally, at night, being bored of the routine, I would just go to the McDonald’s to have supper.

Now, McDonald’s at Bukit Merah Central is now official closed for good. I believe there are many who like me, would miss this McDonald’s outlet. Miss the S$2.50 breakfast before rushing for work; miss the wonderful weekend breakfast; miss the convenience of grapping a quickie snack; miss the night supper. All we could hope for that, another McDonald’s outlet would be opened area the area.

Today, we observed Earth Hour 2010. I can help but to wondering, how does switching off non-essential light for 60 min will save the Earth when the same organization waste electricity on these light for 8759 hours per year and setting the air con temperature at icy cold temperature when it is so hot outdoor.

Just around 8.20pm, about 10 minutes before the Earth Hour observation, I was at Raffles Place.

When I walked past a bank building, I could feel icy cold wind blowing from the bank. The bank was not opened on Saturday. The entrance was opened because there were some contractors working there.

I wonder, do the bank need to set the air conditioning temperature to so low.
I wonder how much energy was consumed for cooling the building to such low winter temperature.
I wonder, how much carbon diode was produced to generate the require energy.

When I reached Singapore River, I saw a technician waiting at the switch board, looking at the time at his mobile phone. He told me, he was waiting for 8.30pm to switch off the non-essential light.

I had the opportunity to observe the difference. The first picture below was taken minutes before the light was switch off and the second picture was taken minutes after the light was switched off.

Singapore River just before Earth Hour 2010

Singapore River minutes just after the start of Earth Hour 2010

I am not surprised that, most would not notice the difference. Basically, the only the light at the edge of the pavement at the river bank was switch off.

I wonder, are these light needed in the first place.

As I walked further down, the really dark place was Esplanade Park, where the concert was held. I watched for a while before moving on to have dinner.

Walking along Esplanade Park during Earth Hour 2010

Esplanade Park during Earth Hour 2010

Earth Hour 2010 Performance at Esplanade Park

Earth Hour 2010 is over…. but what have we achieved? The non-essential light was switched on again for another 8759 hours till Earth Hour 2011. The air con temperature is still set as icy cold as before.

No commitment, no actual plan, no target set on how to save the Earth.

I just saw the news that Earth Hour will be observed on the coming 27 Mar 2010, 8.30 to 9.30pm. I can’t help but to wonder if the purpose of Earth Hour will be achieved.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Hour)

Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. Earth hour was conceived by WWF and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney’s lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. Earth Hour 2010 will take place on March 27, 2010 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., local time.

In the same page, all the achievements were highlighted. Every hour, the organizer hope to outdo the previous year in term of participants, reduction of power consumption in the hour etc.

But in between the year, does the overall power consumption reduced?
Do these supporters committed to a reduction in power consumption for the year ahead?
Do these supporters support the Earth Hour for publicity or image purpose?
Or after the Earth Hour, life goes back to usual?

Just this afternoon, I saw a friend commented on the Facebook on how cold it was in a government building due to air-conditioning. This is a wastage of energy. So much for the supporter’s commitment.

I hope that, this year, it would be a difference. A difference that every supporters really committed to the taking action to reduce power consumption and counter climate change.

For me, I will not switch my lights off for this purpose. I believe that it is a on-going process to counter climate change.

In our everyday conversation, we have a tendency to be careless in our English Language. Sometimes, our carelessness could result in unintended message.

During a Toastmasters Meeting, I was guiding a first time evaluator to evaluate a Project 2 Speech on Organize Your Speech. The speaker was young beautiful lady.

I started by guiding by asking, “What do you think of her introduction?”

“What do you think of her conclusion?”

And lastly, I asked, “What do you think of her BODY?”

At this point, a senior Toastmaster cautioned me, “Hi, mind your wordings, it is her speech body, not her body!”

In this situation, it clearly demonstrated the importance of being careful in our wordings. A missing word could have a completely different meaning and lead to embarrassing situation.

Imagine, the evaluator, standing in front of everyone, commented, “You have an interesting body.”
