If Gluttony Is One Of 7 Deadly Sins, Why Do We Always Have Too Much Food During Christmas Party?

Every year, there are many small private Christmas Parties going on over the world in the month of December. Just last 2 weeks, I attended at least 2 of such functions. One common thing I noticed was that, there was over excess of left over food. Everyone was doing their best to finish the food, but still there was a lot of left over food for people to bring back home.

An important feature of Christmas is the job of giving, especially to the less fortunate ones. This is a noble act of sharing and spreading the joy to everyone.

However, in most Christmas celebrations, especially those with potluck, there is always an over excess of food. There is always at least food for over twice the number of people attending. And the attendees are busy stuffing the food into their months. To me, this is an act of gluttony.

Gluttony is one of 7 Deadly Sins. According to Wikipedia, gluttony is the over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste. In the Christian religions, it is considered a sin because of the excessive desire for food, or its withholding from the needy.

Having too much food during Christmas Parties is gluttony and is against the value of Christmas.

Having too much food is also bad for the health. During one celebration, I was eating and eating to avoid excess of food wastage. As a result, I had difficulty sleeping that night and I was feeling uncomfortable for the following day because of the tight tummy.

I believe that, we all still can enjoy the joy of Christmas, having fun to the fullest at the party with much less food. Just let us control the food at the parties. Do not order much more than the attendees can finish. Do not bring too much food if having potluck. This will reduce wastage, less discomfort due to overeating and most importantly, not to commit the Deadly Sin – Gluttony.

Let us enjoy this Christmas without the Gluttony, one of the 7 Deadly Sins.
