My colleague suddenly showed me a Solar Battery Charger. This device would be put under the sun or some other light source to charge up the battery in this device. There is a USB port for plugging in portable devices like MP3 players. Through this port, this Solar Battery Charger would in term charge the battery in the Portable Device.

He told me that he bought this Charger in China for 35 CNY. This is only about $5.

He opened up the device. There is a lithium ion battery, a solar panel and some control circuitry.

Recently, I saw this website, Earth4Energy.com. This website claims that we can set up our own solar energy system under $200. I did a search on some of these components. I found out that, these components really do not cost much. We can easily make one at home.

Think about it, we do not need to plug our laptops into the main to charge it. Neither our mobile phones, PSP or any other portable devices. Imagine the saving in the electric bill. Anyway, it is only a one time cost to make one of these charger. Sunlight is free. We just have to treat it as another home project.
